These findings demonstrate that perceived emotion exerted a strong influence on the composite-face effect. The present results also highlight the sensitivity of the composite-face effect to statistical regularities present in stimuli, which suggests that such an effect might be observed in other domains. In addition to its theoretical interest in determining the degree of covariation between features, the composite effect may be a useful tool for estimating the perceived emotion of composite stimuli under controlled conditions. Manipulating the perceived emotion of composite faces may prove useful in the early stages of psychotherapies aimed at modifying false recognitions of faces, to better understand the contribution of facial emotions to false recognitions. Furthermore, it might prove useful as a tool for estimating the emotion perceived by people who have difficulty with facial expressions and facial affect recognition [48–50].
