I love this album, even though this was only Cher's second solo album. I sold this one back in the 70s for the money to buy my first 8-track tape recorder, so I can hear this album in all its unadorned, unfettered glory as it was originally unleashed on the WWW.
I think Cher's cover of "I Got You Babe" is the best Cher song of hers. It's hard to call a one-hit wonder, but Cher did have a great song, her take on "All I Really Want to Do," but I like Cher's take on "I Got You Babe" better. I need to find a version with Sonny on harmonica or something. I'm trying to locate a live version of "Hooked on a Feeling" as well.
A week before Cher signed a recording contract with Warner Bros., Don Kirshner was playing Cher's version of "All I Really Want To Do" on his Columbia-distributed "American Bandstand" TV show and it was partly heard because the ad-lib track (with Sonny on ac-3) stole the show. That same week, Kirshner had introduced The Jayhawks, a new group from his hometown of Kansas City, to the public. The Jayhawks, of course, had their own hit single ("Just Like A Ghetto») and were an immediate success. But "All I Really Want To Do" was their true first single, and the male quartet was probably not as inspired by female crooner Cher as the ladies were inspired by their own balladeer; perhaps Sonny on the harmonica would have been too distracting for the men of The Jayhawks.
